dream of the garden city
Milano Marittima was born from a dream. The dream of some pioneers from Milan that at the beginning of the last century wanted to develop a new tourist spot along the Adriatic coast, inspired by the idea of a “garden city”. Milano Marittima is an extraordinary experience, unique in Italy, designed as a new “vacation city”, that was built with an urban development plan compatible with the surrounding environment.
One of the people who had a decisive role in its development was Giuseppe Palanti. Known as an artist, he was also involved in decorating, sign writing, designing of new forms of furniture, and set design.
On the 1st of June 1911, the “Milano Marittima Society for the development of the beach at Cervia” was formed. The first five villas were built between 1913 and 1914. The “villa Palanti” is testimony to the building style inspired by “stile liberty” which can be still admired today in Viale 2 Giugno. The official date of birth for Milano Marittima was the 14th of August 1912; therefore the centenary celebrations are less than three years away.
