Holiday villas and colonie
In the nineteen twenties and thirties the groundwork was done for the development of Milano Marittima and so the holiday resort par excellence was born.
Development resumed with the building of holiday villas in liberty and neo-gothic style. At the same time, a need was felt to build a hotel with a name that reflected the particular character of the location drawn from the sea and the pine woods: the Mare Pineta, namely “sea and pine woods”, was finished in 1927 and is still in existence today. Another important feature of tourism development was the construction of some large colonie (a children```` s holiday camp in a single building), each capable of accommodating several hundred children.
In 1927 the Società Orchestrali from Milan built the Colonia della Mutualità Scolastica. In 1933 the Colonia Mantovana was built facing the sea between the present day Via due Giugno and Via Forlì and could accommodate more than 500 children. This was followed by the Colonia Varese and Colonia Montecatini, which could accommodate 1500 children and 100 service personnel. Meanwhile, at Milano Marittima the combination of sport and tourism began to enjoy great success with events even of national importance.
